After shopping in Athlone including at James McBride butcher's we go through the lock. The weir is measured by two people supported by a rib.

Going through the Shannon Callows we spot again a few waders including Black-tailed Godwits (Uferschnepfe) and Lapwings (Kiebitz).

We moor at Clonmacnoise and dawdle away the rest of this mild day. A young couple comes along with bicycles. They spontaneously decide to go for a swim and we lend them a towel.

Later the jetty becomes quiet and we again watch Lapwings and a Redshank on the shore.

Towards evening a hire boat from the Erne arrives with Lisa and Wolfgang from Germany on board. What a nice surprise! We know Wolfgang for years from a German internet forum (Shannon-Forum) but we have never met before. Later in the evening they come on board for an hour or so.

Motto of the day: Summer on the Shannon

A cuckoo calls while the sun is breaking through a low layer of clouds. Morning fog covers the scenery and coats the Callows with a magic light. The fishes are busy and the birds too.
